Mental Housekeeping
by Zan Z. Packard

I realize that it's past spring, but mental housekeeping doesn't really need to happen with the seasons. It is however, something that we should all be doing on a regular basis.

So just what is mental housekeeping? Imagine your mind filled with thoughts and behaviors like a large closet. The floor of the closet represents your subconscious and the upper shelves represent your hopes and dreams. You never really see what's on the floor and you have to look up to see your visions. Everything else in--between is the stuff that you deal with on a daily basis.

Now, imagine that you haven't cleaned out your closet for years and years...pretty scary image isn't it because as a sentient being you've collected many new things along the way. For the purposes of this activity, assume that you haven't thrown anything out, therefore things are pretty jammed in there, probably even overflowing. How are you going to find what you want and add anything new?

I want you to spend some quiet time and clean out your closet so that you can weed out the things that are no longer 'you', things that don't fit, things that need to be fixed, and things you totally forgot about. As you continue this process you will also find things that bring up a flood of memories (both good and bad), and the list goes on and on and on. If your closet gets too crowded, then you really have no room for anything new that you want in your present life.

Your task is to start taking a mental inventory. Start cleaning out your beliefs and behaviors. Just like a closet, you will start with the things that are the most apparent--things that you deal with on a daily basis. You're either distracted because everything is a jumble or you are stuck because you have no room to add a darn thing-you want something new, you just have to room for it in your life.

When you uncover something (belief or behavior), take a moment to remember just when and why you acquired that belief.  Take a moment to decide if it still 'fits' with what you want in your life now. Once you begin to clear out some thoughts and behaviors that no longer serve your best interest, you can begin to replace them, consciously, with what you do want.

It's about choice, and it's your life, don't walk around with some ugly, cluttered, overstuffed, outdated beliefs that serve no positive purpose in your life. Please realize though, I've never met anyone who has reached the floor of their closet, minds are not just simple containers with straightforward lines. Minds have nooks and crannies and hidden passageways for you to store, stash and hide things. Decluttering will help you have greater clarity and stronger direction.

Wouldn't you like to be able to add something new and exciting to your mind and be able to grab that perfect behavior to go with your perfect outfit?
