Am I Doing It Right?

I hear this all the time. New journalers wonder if they're doing it right. Experienced journalers wonder if something's normal. The good news is there is no wrong way to journal. But there are 3 rules I live by and they are:

    1. Write every day
    2. Trust the Process
    3. Don't feel you need to act
        just because some thing
        comes into your awareness.

What's Behind These Rules?

1. Write Every Day: For decades, Dr. James Pennebaker has done multiple research to measure the health effects of journaling. In each research the procedures were amazingly simple: All participants were asked to journal for 3-5 consecutive days, each day for 15-30 minutes. The overall benefits included stress reduction and increased immune system. Wow...no special training, no big investment, no special equipment. Just your commitment to 15-30 minutes a day.

2. Trust the Process: You don't need to know what to write about. Your brain will take you where you need to go. And because journaling is self-guided you will go at your own pace...just as fast or as slow as you need to go. There is no right or wrong way (just the write way)...Trust the Process.

3. No, you don't have to act on what ever comes up: Sometimes just becoming aware is enough. Other times, just sitting with the information begins the healing process. Don't rush anything, and if you feel that there is too much for you to handle on your own, consult a mental health professional--never go it alone if you need help.

Have you made the commitment to yourself to destress, strengthen your immune system and start enjoying more out of life--the Write Way to Happiness? (Sounds like a book is in the making!)
